“A great year for innovation” – Six Total Theatre Awards Announced, One Significant Contribution Award - in a year of record applications.

The 2010 Total Theatre Awards were announced this afternoon at a ceremony held at Fringe Central. Six awards were given across the three categories of Emerging Company, Physical/Visual Theatre and Innovation, with an additional award given to David Bates of The Famous Speigeltent for Significant Contribution to the field of Total Theatre.

This year, the awards received a record 417 entries, an increase of 56% on last year, including an increase in applications from shows listed as comedy in the Fringe brochure.

Pippa Bailey, Director of Total Theatre Awards said “This year, we have assessed more shows than ever, and have seen an interesting movement from acts listed as comedy who are embracing total theatre and applying to be considered. It has also been a great year for innovation and the judges felt strongly that this should be recognised, so we have given six awards instead of the planned five across the three categories.”

Notes for Editors
Who is behind the Total Theatre Awards?
The Total Theatre Awards is a project of Total Theatre, a small agency producing projects to support theatre makers and develop their audiences. Total Theatre is affiliated with Total Theatre Magazine, although the awards are independent of the publication. The 2010 Total Theatre Awards are supported by the Barbican London, London International Mime Festival, New Wolsey Theatre & Pulse Festival, Norfolk & Norwich Festival Festival, Royal & Derngate Northampton, The Showroom / University of Chichester, University of Winchester, Wales Millennium Centre.

How does the process work?
Companies performing at this year’s Fringe could apply to be considered for the awards by submitting an application form before 30th July 2010. All shows that applied have been visited by at least one peer assessor who decides if a show meets the criteria. If successful, the show is attended by another assessor who can then put it forward for the longlist, which is then reduced to a shortlist. A panel of twelve judges that includes directors, producers, academics and journalists judge the shortlisted shows. Judges must see all shows in a category to be able to judge it, and must not have any association with work they are judging.
